Status and Luxury Woven in Golden Fabric

Wealth. Power. Prowess. Gold is associated with all of these attributes. Before gold jewelry became the iconic item for these attributes, fabrics sparkling with golden thread and accents were how people showed their status in society.

For thousands of years, finely woven silk was a status symbol for the elite. Silk is woven from the cocoons of silkworms. It is an arduous process to sort, soften and roll the fibers of the cocoons into skeins. This process is why silk has always been seen as a sign of refinement and elegance. The time and craftsmanship it takes to create a shimmering swath of silk is worth the price people have paid over the years for this luxurious fabric.

Silk was often paid for in gold, especially when it was brocade silk, which was adorned with threads wrapped in gold and silver or threads created of these precious metals. The Chinese created beautiful designs with these threads, flowing images and motifs that could be found no where else.

In today’s society luxurious robes and fabrics have become gleaming gold and gems in jewelry as the way to show your elegance and class. The step from gentle, flowing cloth to shimmering stones in sparkling settings has been a slow transition, but gold remains the iconic standard throughout time.
